My favorite pastime in the spring and summer- and fall- is popping into any garden nursery I pass (or am in the vicinity of of!) My garden is pretty full up but it seems there is always room for one more. Even if I do not purchase anything, I still just love to wander down the aisles looking for new faces, listening to other plant lovers chat about what they are looking for, and breathing in the quite peace of beauty growing.
One of my new favorite plants is Origanum Kent Beauty, Ornamental Oregano or Wintersweet. I just love the shape of it and the soft watercolor shades. Rather than “flowers” it has bracts which look similar to Hops. These plants have lush silvery foliage tinged with rose which fits in perfectly with my white & silver garden color palette. Last autumn, I planted a few in my back rock bed. Alas, although it is zoned for 5, they did not over-winter. My suspicion is that I did not water them in well enough for them to get established before the cooler weather came in.
Here is a quick little video of me finding some in our local garden nursery, the Urban Garden in Lafayette, Colorado. I brought home three to put in the pot (as shown above!). I am eager to see if they fill in the pot and if they attract any pollinators. I doubt they would overwinter in the container so I will most likely move them into the garden bed in early fall or heavily mulch the pot and cross my fingers!! In the meantime, I am going to enjoy them all summer!
